Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

How do you differ from an architect or interior designer?

An architect is a design professional who is licensed to perform a range of architectural services. An interior designer is a licensed professional that caters to a range of interior services. A building designer is a design professional that specializes in residential design and space planning. We listen to what you want to do, look at the ideas you have, and offer a solution that is within your budget.

What is it you do, exactly?

We specialize in new residential homes and addition designs. We do interior remodel design in both residential and light commercial. We also do complete home inspections and now, home modifications. People, Places & Things LLC (PPT) is a Residential Design and Space Planning business that been around for over 13 years.

Suppose I have my own ideas?

We hope you do. After all, we're designing your home with you! We listen to what you like and don't like, how you live and use your current space. We help you achieve - with skill and imagination - what you desire. You'll find that our solutions balance aesthetics with your living patterns. In addition to listening to your preferences, we keep in mind function, budget, location, and setting of the building. We'll give you the benefit of our professional opinion and ideas. But the last word is always yours. The only time we insist is when safety or code issues are involved. We help you achieve - with skill and imagination - what you desire.

Suppose I have my own contractor or other professionals?

We are pleased to work with a variety of professional contractors and tradepeople. The relationships we've built with contractors allow the work to move a bit faster because they know what we're looking for.

We've already started our project... Can you still help?

Certainly. There are many givens in any design job. In the case of partially done projects, there are just more givens! We pride ourselves in being adept at these jobs. Many questions come up along the way. We are sensitive to decisions that have been made and have no proprietary feelings that everything be done through us.

Is our project too small?

Not at all! Finding the best solution that fits most, if not all of the wishes is our job. We do many small projects for people who are eager to make the most with what they have. In our view, solutions are answers to challenges of any size. Whether you have a closet or a whole-house design, one department or an entire building, we provide a flexible, accessible service.

What is a “home inspection”?

Every house has it problems. Some are more obvious than others. It's the hidden deficiencies that make for unwelcome surprises. These can be avoided by having a home inspected by an unbiased, trained professional. Our professional inspectors are trained to uncover existing problems, as well as recognize early indications of future problems. They also posses the skills needed to relate the information to you in a way that is easily understood.

What is a “home modification”?

A home modification is a term used for “aging-in-place” for babyboomers. Altering the physical environment of the home so as to remove hazards and provide an environment that is more functional for the client. Examples of home modification include the installation of grab bars and no-slip foot maps in the bathroom, lowered counters and sinks in the kitchen, stair lifts carry a person up and down a stairway while seated. These and other home modifications not only make a person's home safer, but also can help the client to remain in their home longer.

Why belong to associations and why do you go thru continue education?

Knowledge does not stop after graduation. To be a cutting edge business, seeking knowledge is a must. Belonging to various associations means that we have an ear on new products and technology that will be coming out now and in the future. In addition, obtaining continue education credits in you field shows the client that PPT is not satisfied in the status quote in the residential design field.

How do you charge?

We work with you to meet your budget needs. If it by the hour, lump sum or a percentage PPT will analyze your budget and needs before submitted our price. We do this to allow everyone to take advantage of the design process because prudent planning with a professional actually saves you time and money in the long run.
